Work “With” Your Inner Gremlins

I used to think that I had to fight my inner gremlins. Many years ago, I discovered it’s much more productive to work with them.

Let me share a story….

When I hit my rock bottom on that park bench….. I discovered that I was allowing my gremlins to run rampant.

They shared stories of…

Victimhood– ”You’re the victim here. There’s nothing you can do. Everything is against you. You are powerless.”
Helplessness – ”You can’t change this. There’s no hope for you.”
Pity–” You deserve sympathy, handouts and pity.”
Fear–” The world is a scary, unfair place. There’s no point in trying. Bad things will happen to you. You don’t deserve to be seen and heard.”

Even writing this, I can feel that old exhaustion and hamster wheel…

It was life sucking. Soul depleting. Depressing….heavy….

But when I started to bring to the light what my gremlins were saying, I took back my power.

When we shine light on our inner voice and gremlins, it makes them less scary.

It brings what’s been hiding in the shadows to the light…so we can work with it.

And when we name our gremlins, it gives us a new playful way to work “with” them.

Stop fighting or denying your gremlins. It’s pointless…

Let’s explore what inner gremlins are. How they relate to our inner critic. And dig into strategies you can use to conquer them.

What are Inner Gremlins?

Inner gremlins are the negative thoughts. And self-limiting beliefs that reside within us.

They are the critical voices that whisper, "You're not good enough," "You'll fail," or " You don't deserve success."

These gremlins thrive on our fears and insecurities. They often stem from past experiences, societal pressures, or unrealistic expectations we place upon ourselves.

Our inner critic is closely related to our gremlins.

It is the voice that amplifies our fears, doubts, and insecurities. The inner critic feeds off our vulnerabilities. This makes us question our abilities and reinforces negative self-talk.

Recognize the connection between our inner gremlins and the inner critic and you can break free from the cycle.

Strategies to Overcome Inner Gremlins:

Awareness and Identification:

Start by becoming aware of your gremlin's voice.

Pay attention to the negative thoughts and beliefs that arise when you face challenges or step out of your comfort zone.

Identify the patterns and triggers that activate your gremlins…..

This will allow you to confront them head-on.

2. Challenge Your Beliefs:

Question the validity of your gremlin's messages.

Ask yourself, "Is this belief serving me?"

Often, you'll realize that these beliefs are based on assumptions or past experiences….that no longer hold true.

Challenge and reframe these beliefs with positive, empowering statements.

3. Embrace Vulnerability:

Acknowledge that vulnerability is a natural part of growth.

Understand that it takes courage to face your fears and move forward despite them.

Embrace vulnerability as an opportunity for personal and professional development. Know that growth often happens outside of your comfort zone.

4. Cultivate Self-Compassion:

Replace self-criticism with self-compassion.

Treat yourself with kindness, understanding, and forgiveness.

Remember that everyone faces fears and self-doubt at some point.

Remind yourself that making mistakes is a stepping stone to success. And that failure is a valuable teacher.

5. Set Realistic Goals:

Break down your goals into smaller, achievable steps.

By setting realistic goals, you build momentum and gain confidence along the way.

Celebrate each milestone, no matter how small.

Fuel your motivation with these celebrations. And this will silence the gremlin's negativity.

And sometimes I find myself on my knees praying for answers and support.

Having a higher power to look saved my life.

And it can save you too.

But even when we aren’t in dire need, spirituality is powerful.

As a business owner, I find my miracles and success come directly from my meditation mat or from my time down on my knees…where I surrender and pray.

Many of my clients feel like they’ve hit a wall. Like everything they’ve tried has failed.

And they have no idea what to do next.

This is when I invite them to turn to spirituality.

Consider asking your loved ones, mentors, and friends for their feedback. Sometimes we need a third party to help us see what’s clear to everyone else.

These days leaders are being tested. From the pandemic to the pending recession. From the great resignation to wars booming abroad. There’s not a lack of stress out there. All you have to do is read the news to see we live in a complex world. What this means is our leaders must become even more resilient than before….

When I’m working with leaders, a foundational piece of success is building perseverance. Just like when you spend time in the gym, we need to exercise your perseverance muscle for it to grow.

And if you’re new to this, it takes even more patience and practice. So be gentle and kind to yourself as you play, experiment and sometimes fall flat on your face.

You see, sometimes in building our perseverance we must also fail. But failure is only failure when you don’t learn from it. I teach my clients how to experiment, fall fast, learn from it, and get back up and back to it.

After working with hundreds of leaders across multiple industries, here are strategies that ring true no matter what.

4 Strategies to Help Leaders Build Their Grit

Strategy #1: Build Upon Your Past Moments of Perseverance

Whenever life throws us a curveball, it’s important to remind ourselves that we have handled challenges in the past. Borrowing from past moments of challenge with positive outcomes helps us build faith in ourselves.

Knowing that we’ve got possibility within is key.

When things hit the fan, so to speak, we need a foundation to lean on. We need to build our internal list of successes. Even small ones.

I like to encourage my clients to start what I call a Jar of Wins. Put a jar on your desk or kitchen counter. Place some post-it notes and a pen next to it.

Every time you have a small or big win, write it down. Put it in the jar.

Why is this important?

Because when life knocks us down, we need to remember that we can do it. We need to have something to go back to that reminds us how strong we are. How creative we can be. How resilient we are even in tough times.

And if you’re new to this, you can start small. Your list could be “I got out of bed today”. Or “I read a blog on perseverance”.

The power of this exercise is that it builds over time. As you start seeing your strengths, you have more to lean on. You will have more confidence. You will have more belief in yourself. You will show up ready to take on any challenge.

This is where I start with my clients. And from here we build a snowball effect…where success, winning and strength are inevitable.

Strategy #2: It’s Not a Marathon: Take One Baby Step at a Time

Remember that funny comedy, What About Bob ? In it, Bob is facing phobias about being in the world. For him leaving his home is a HUGE feat.

His therapist recommends that he take “baby steps”. In the movie you hear Bob say “Baby steps out the front door”. Or “baby steps to the elevator”.

With each small baby step, Bob’s confidence grows.

Perseverance is the same thing. Like any skill, it takes practice.

We start with baby steps. Small actions with small wins.

Pacing yourself in this is key. I don’t want you taking on too much all at once. This benefits no one. And will get you stuck in overwhelm or procrastination.

Instead, I want you to commit to taking ONE small step towards resilience and perseverance every day.

And celebrate that small step. Add it to your jar. Tell your spouse, children, and friends. Share your success.

The happiest lives stem from those who know it’s about the small things. The more we celebrate the small wins, the happier we will be.

And I want you to be extremely happy. In fact, I was overjoyed with this process.

This is a journey. It never ends. We are always learning…always growing.

You’ve got this.

Strategy #3: Experiment with a Large Dose of Patience

As we build your perseverance muscle, it’s not a straight line. Like anyone getting into a new routine with your personal trainer, you know this.

You have setbacks. You might even miss a day at the gym. You might even not want to do anything because your body is aching so much. You could be afraid of even getting started.

Or you go big one day, only to feel the struggle days later.

As we lean into faith and trying new things to grow our grit and perseverance, we will sometimes fall flat on our face.

I want you to accept that this is a journey. I tell my clients to be creative. To have fun with this. To look at this like a scientist…..one experiment at a time.

Scientists don’t consider one hypothesis as a failure. No, they learn from it and develop the next experiment.

This is how I teach my clients to approach their perseverance.

Last but not least…

Strategy #4: Lean on Faith to Keep Going

My mom used to tell me, “Joe I didn’t raise quitters”. This has always stuck with me. I think it’s developed me into someone who at the core knows to take action.

I’m also a man of faith. I believe that for us to reach our full potential, we must learn to have faith in ourselves. We must believe we are capable of anything. We can achieve our wildest dreams.

But sometimes, I need to lean on my faith in something bigger than myself. When I fall flat on my face, I find myself on my knees in prayer.

And that’s ok. In fact, I believe that when we fall down, we learn the most important lessons. We grow the most when we hit the ground.

Because it’s in these moments where we learn the stuff we are made of. We learn that we can do anything…even when we “fail”.

I encourage you to dig into your faith. Lean on what you believe. This is where deep roots come from.

And when life really throws us for a loop, for me, it’s my faith that carries me through.

Strategy 1: Set specific, measurable and achievable goals

How will you know when you have achieved a successful outcome if you don’t have a specific date and measurement for it?

The answer: you won’t.

When we set resolutions and goals, the more specific we are, the better off we are.

We must know what it will look like. Feel like. Sound like…when we arrive at our end goal.

For example, if you want to meditate more….. How many minutes a day? How many days a week?

What will this do for you?

How will you hold yourself accountable?

When you travel will you stick with it?

Here are some examples of solid resolutions and goals:

Increase my business revenue by 25% in overhead through adding one new mastermind charging $50,000 per head by November 2023
Travel to 3 new countries, have 4 new experiences with my family by the end of 2023 to improve my connection and creativity

Set specific goals with numbers and dates. Once you’ve set them, site with them. Reflect on what it will feel like once you’ve achieved them.

Do they excite you? If not, revisit and reset some new goals.

We want goals and resolutions that motivate and drive us.

Strategy 2: Make a Plan

The first astronaut didn’t make it to the moon with a goal alone.

No…they set out specific plans.

They tested. They failed.

They got back up….dusted themselves off…and tried again.

For each of your goals and resolutions, put together an actionable plan.

A plan that will get you there.

Most of us never achieve our goals simply because they are too big. We haven’t reverse engineered what it will take to make them real.

Rewind backwards from success and map out the step by step action plan you need to make success inevitable.

But don’t forget, your biggest heroes didn’t get to where they are today without a step by step plan.

If all Rocky ever did was kick-ass, no one would give a damn about those movies. We love Rocky because he gets up whenever he gets knocked down. In the first movie, he actually loses the fight, it ends with a split decision and his foe Apollo Creed retaining the championship belt. We all remember Rocky as the champ, but he actually loses the big fight at the end of the movie! By the end of that movie, in our mind’s eye, he is the champ because we know him well enough at that point to know that he isn’t going to be down for long.

I have had many failures and setbacks in my life, and I do not regret any of them to this day. Now I may regret the pain that my addictions caused my family, but I do not regret my failures. They are what brought me to this place and made me what I am today.
